Is 19 months too young to move from crib to toddler bed?

Our son will be 19 months in 3 days, and we're considering moving him to his toddler bed. We have a convertible crib, so it won't actually be that much of a change for him. The other morning I went in his room, and he was reaching over the edge of the crib, about ready to fall out. He has hardwood floors in his room, and I'm very nervous now that he's going to topple out one of these days. I am planning on making sure his room is safe, and putting up a gate so he can't wander the house if he gets out of bed, but I'm just concerned he's too young for this!
