Which kind of tree is best to use for outdoor handrailings if i want to keep the logs in natural form?

i'm replacing some hand railings outside for my log cabin which are made of cedar logs, and want to use the trees from the property to do so. i'm wondering if i should stick with cedar, or switch to a hardwood.
