I want to dye my hair ash brown?

I have natural black hair. I tried dying my hair using the permanent color dyes, but my hair turned out dark reddish/orange brown. Yuck! Do i need to buy bleach or something? Can someone guide me through this coloring process? What products do you recommend so that I can achieve the look I want?
