Can you keep a person's ashes after cremation?

Here's the thing, Me and my brother lost our mom and dad, we had them cremated and had there ashes in an urn, I got custody of my brother and now we are living in apartment. I had my parents ashes and they have and altar where we could give them flowers, light some candles, pray for them and even talk to them when we are lonely. one day our landlady(she's old and a bit traditional) said that persons ashes should be kept in quiet place where they can rest in peace and should not be in the apartment. Is this true? Is keeping the ashes okay? I don't see anything wrong, but I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Thank you for your answers and suggestions, looking forward to it.
